Our favorite Hollywood Patriot is back in theaters today with his latest film, Edge of Darkness, Mel's first acting role since Signs in 2002.
In a recent interview UK's Daily Mail, Mel got political.
Quotes:
'I feel sorry for Tiger Woods,' he says. 'Why are we talking about this when we're sending 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan? You've got this history-changing event going on and we're talking about Tiger's private life and golf injuries. He's being used as a diversion and it just drives me crazy. You come out savaged. I just think, 'Who cares?'
'The issues it tackles - the corporate cover-up, the conspiracy theories - definitely appealed to me. It's kind of a stab in the dark, but you don't have to stab too far before you hit something these days. I mean, there's a lot of stuff going on that anybody with a brain can see isn't right. I don't know if we've hit anything on the head or not, but it's feasible.
'We're living in a culture of death,' he says. 'The central theme of Apocalypto was how family is threatened. What does human sacrifice mean? Is human sacrifice the ancient Mayans cutting heads off in a bid to worship their gods, or is it sending lots of young people to war under the pretence that the enemy has weapons of mass destruction? I'm not denigrating the military - these are brave boys and girls. It's the leaders. Our leaders should go out there themselves and slug it out. Just the two of them, like they used to do in the Dark Ages. Dark? That was civilised.'
